THE CHALLENGE…

As part of a larger smart home solution, we were asked by the Client at a very early stage to design a high end home cinema for this new build property in Cambridgeshire. Designed and built by themselves, it sits in a lovely rural location with sweeping views across the countryside.

This new property is a long held dream of the family, and houses and extensive list of smart home technology all based around a Control 4 system. Multiple zones of audio, video, interfaces with heating, lighting controls and automated TV brackets, CCTV and door access, the list is long!

The owner is a self-confessed movie fanatic, and the top of the wish list was a high end cinema space designed into the upper floor of the house.

The project was recently awarded ‘Best Home Cinema £40K – £120K’ at this years CEDIA EMEA awards and we couldn’t be prouder. We created a stunning example of a private home cinema, deemed ‘technically perfect’ by the CEDIA Awards judging panel. To put it simply – it rocks!

THE SOLUTION…

Our first task was to assist with the physical construction of the space. Intended to seat 6 people, the roof space provided a challenge as we were intent on utilising Dolby Atmos 3D audio to it’s best potential.

We consulted heavily with Artcoustic and Dolby in order to ensure that our detailed designs met the exact criteria as set out within the Atmos guidelines. One issue we had to overcome was that the angled ceiling did not conform with the standard ‘box’ envelope that we might like to design within, and the overhead speaker angles were critical to the success of the audio experience. Thankfully, we were given the go ahead by Dolby in the US as having the perfect technical design for the space.

The construction drawings and acoustic designs were handed to the client to build, and we worked with them on the internal design and look, whilst guiding on the technical considerations regarding speaker placements, viewing angles and distances, acoustic treatments, finishes and the like.

As part of the wider Control 4 systems deployed elsewhere in the house, the cinema has an impressive specification;

• 9.2.6 Dolby Atmos 3D audio system
• Artcoustic Spitfire 8-4,6-3-Control 2 speakers
• Trinnov Altitude 32 processor
• Rotel amplification
• Oppo 4k Bluray player
• Sony VW520ES 4K projector, ISF Caliberated
• Screen Excellence 130′ 1-2.37 cinematic acoustically transparent screen
• Front Row Home Cinema seating
• Control 4 7″ touch-panel control
• Control 4 lighting systems

Once the build was complete we programmed the control system, calibrated the projector to ISF Standards, and our audio guru Simon tuned the system within an inch of its life! The balloon is a critical part of the process Simon assures us!
